Skilled and eccentric guitar guru Ben Eller has been at the YouTube game for the better part of a decade now. His over 200 videos are often both entertaining and informative. One of his earliest YouTube successes was with his series “This is Why You Suck at Guitar,” which is a break-down and analysis of a variety of technical challenges that often stump electric guitarists. Many of his videos are dedicated lessons on how to play riffs or solos from well-known, and not-so-well-known, songs much like his recent post.
Many of you metal heads out there will be familiar with Marty Friedman’s solo to “Tornado of Souls” (Megadeth). It’s one of those iconic electric guitar solos that has stood the test of time. It’s well constructed, virtuosic, and damn difficult to play. Here’s a live video from a Megadeth concert in London in 1992.
Interesting fact: Marty Friedman lives in Japan now and speaks fluent Japanese.
In Ben’s recent post, he breaks down this solo note for note and shows you in great detail how to perform it.
